Domiciliary (visiting) care – Sometimes called “hourly” or “visiting” care, domiciliary care involves a professional carer visiting at agreed times to help with personal care, domestic tasks, meal preparation, medication support and companionship. Visits can be short (half‑hour minimum) or several hours depending on need[1]. Care plans are flexible; additional visits can be arranged during illness or following hospital discharge.

Live‑in care – With live‑in care, a carer lives in the person’s home and provides round‑the‑clock assistance. The carer helps with personal care, cooking, housekeeping, medication and companionship, and often becomes part of the household. Live‑in care suits people needing continuous support but wishing to stay in familiar surroundings. Costs are usually higher than hourly care because the carer is always present and accommodation must be provided.

Key differences:

  • Presence and continuity – live‑in care offers 24‑hour support, whereas domiciliary care is delivered in scheduled visits.
  • Cost structure – hourly rates for domiciliary care are typically £28–£40 per hour[2], while live‑in care is charged on a weekly or monthly basis and may seem more expensive but can be cost‑effective compared with residential care.
  • Flexibility and independence – domiciliary care maintains maximum independence; live‑in care provides security and companionship but requires accommodating a carer.
