Managing medications can be complex, especially when multiple medicines are prescribed. Carers play a vital role but must follow guidelines.
Carer responsibilities
- Prompting and assisting – Carers can remind individuals to take medicines and help remove pills from packaging[1].
- Administering medicines – Administration is appropriate only when assessment identifies a need and it is recorded in the care plan[1]. Carers must be trained and competent and follow prescriber directions[1].
- Medication management – Carers may help order repeat prescriptions, organise medicines in dosette boxes, collect prescriptions and use pharmacy delivery services[2].
- Safety – Carers should ensure medicines are stored correctly, not administer out‑of‑date drugs and return unused medicines to the pharmacist[2].
Limitations and rights
- Client consent – Individuals have the right to refuse medication; carers should not force them[2]. If swallowing is difficult, carers should seek advice from a GP or pharmacist before crushing tablets or mixing with food[2].
- Scope – Carers must not change dosages or mix over‑the‑counter medicines with prescribed medicines without professional guidance[2].
